ABOUT MY BOOKS
I AM AN AWARD-WINNING CHILDREN'S BOOK AUTHOR
I AM ALSO A FORMER TEACHER, SCIENTIST, AND CHILDREN'S ENTERTAINER.
I have published five children's books since 2015. My three picture books, for ages 5-9, are fictional stories and my animal fact books (ages 8 and up) are (obviously) non-fiction. Over the past six years, I have visited almost 5000 K-6 elementary school students as part of my author reading series.
Writing children's books has allowed me to beautifully blend my passion for science, and science education, with the arts. My two degrees in science have been invaluable while doing research for my non-fiction books and instrumental in helping me increase science literacy for lower elementary students through interactive presentations and hands-on activities.
As an author of picture books, I don't shy away from difficult topics such as the challenges of living with a sibling with autism and the negative effects of bullying (The Two Trees) and coping with a "new normal" when a young boy has to go live with his grandfather after his mother is hospitalized (The Underdog Duckling).
Despite somewhat serious undertones, my picture books exude hope, love, and personal growth as the characters grapple with and overcome unusual situations, with the help of a caring adult.
My animal trivia books, When Sleeping Bird Fly: 365 Amazing Facts About The Animal Kingdom and When Crocodiles Cry: 365 More Amazing Facts About The Animal Kingdom, on the other hand, are full of and silliness and fun. The nature of these books--fun bite-sized facts--is appealing to adults too. Many families purchase these books for vacation time at the cottage or winter cabin.
All of my books have questions at the back of the book for families, classrooms, or small groups to review and discuss.
Most of my books also have an accompanying PDF of extension activities that takes the reader beyond the limits of the book itself. These extension activities are FREE to download at any time. Click here to view.
As a member of The Writers' Union of Canada and the Ontario Writers-In-The-School Program (WISP), I can receive full funding to do a virtual author presentation at your Ontario school for the 2021-2022 school year.
